Jawai in November and December: Weather, Leopard Sightings and Trip Tips

November and December are when Jawai's winter season begins. The heat of the monsoon months is gone, the nights turn cold, migratory birds settle around the dam, and the leopards stay visible for longer stretches of the day. If you are choosing between Jawai in November and Jawai in December, or planning a winter trip around Christmas and New Year, here is what each month is really like: the weather and temperatures, the leopard and bird sightings, the crowds, what to pack, and how to plan the days.
At Jawai Safari's, we have run leopard safaris around Jawai since 2011, and these two months are when most of our guests ask the same questions.
Jawai in November
November weather in Jawai
Regional averages for the Pali district area put November daytime temperatures at about 28–30°C, with nights of about 14–16°C. The days are warm and sunny, and the mornings are cool enough that you will want a light jacket in the open jeep. Rain is very unlikely: from November through spring, the region is almost completely dry. Actual days vary from year to year, so check a short-range forecast before you travel.
Leopard and bird sightings in November
November is the month winter begins to change the landscape. Leopards are most active at dawn and dusk, and as the heat drops they spend less of the day hidden in shade, so morning and evening safaris both work well. Migratory birds begin arriving in numbers around the Jawai Dam, which makes November a good month to add a birding safari to your trip.
Crowds in November
November is usually easier than December for getting the slot you want. The busy season is only starting, so you generally have more choice of dates and stays. Even so, safaris must be booked in advance.
Jawai in December
December weather in Jawai
December is noticeably colder. Daytime temperatures average about 23–25°C, and nights fall to about 9–11°C. Early mornings in an open jeep feel much colder than the daytime figure suggests, especially with wind, so pack real layers for the sunrise safari. Skies are mostly clear, and rain is very unlikely.
Leopard sightings in December
December is the start of peak season in Jawai. Leopard activity is strong, and in the cold weather leopards tend to stay visible for longer stretches, sunning themselves on the granite rocks in the morning. Our guides track their movement across the five zones (Bera, Sena, Maad, Jawai Dam and the Temple Zone). Sightings are never guaranteed on any safari, but December is one of the best months to try.
Christmas and New Year in Jawai
Winter holidays are when Jawai is busiest. Sunrise slots in particular fill quickly through December and January, and nearby stays book out earlier than in other months. If you are planning around Christmas or New Year, book your safari and your stay as early as you can. [CONFIRM: add an exact lead time (for example, 'at least 3–4 weeks ahead') only if the client has booking data to support it.]
November vs December: Which Month Is Better?
· Weather: November is warmer and easier for daytime; December is cold, with chilly mornings.
· Leopards: Both are good. December has strong activity and longer visibility in the cold.
· Birds: November is when migratory birds arrive; December keeps them at the dam, and birding stays good through winter.
· Crowds: November is quieter; December, especially Christmas and New Year, is the busiest.
· Best for: choose November for an easier booking and milder days, and December for the classic cold-morning winter safari.
If you are unsure, pick the month that fits your dates, because both give you a very good chance of a rewarding trip. For a wider view across the year, see our post on the best time to visit Jawai.
Planning for Another Month?
If your dates fall in October, January, February or March instead, the month-by-month temperatures and sightings are in our post on the best time to visit Jawai. This page stays focused on November and December, the two months where winter begins and peaks.
